Developing Young Workforce Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is the Scottish Government’s national strategy for strengthening links between businesses and education to better prepare children and young people for the world of work. The headline aim of the programme is to encourage and support more employers to engage directly with schools and colleges to recruit more young people and promote diversity in their workforce.

The DYW Regional Group for Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire (DYW LED) was established in October 2017 to ensure that young people across the region have work relevant experience and opportunities while still at school. DYW collaborates with schools, to bring industry into the classroom, and give young people first-hand experience of the world of work.

DYW works in partnership with employers, encouraging them to play an active role in shaping Scotland’s education system. Employers can then help create and educate the talent pool they need, benefiting from the fresh perspective that young employees bring to the workplace.

Our aim is to create a culture of real partnership working between employers and education, facilitating employers to view themselves as co-investors/co-designers of the school curriculum to deliver the qualifications and skills industry requires.

North Lanarkshire’s Working is an employability and training service for local unemployed residents. We are committed to getting people in North Lanarkshire ready for work and into work. In addition, we provide a number of additional services such as training help, childcare support and debt and money advice.

We are also committed to helping new and existing businesses in North Lanarkshire through a coordinated package of advice, recruitment and financial support.

South Lanarkshire Works is the employability skills pipeline managed by South Lanarkshire Council’s, Finance and Corporate Resources Employability Team.

South Lanarkshire Work’s activity has proved to be a catalyst of new service development for unemployed people, making it easier for local businesses to connect with recruitment and support.

We have a dedicated team who will provide a one-to-one service to job seekers and employees. We offer services such as training, confidence building, childcare support, and a dedicated money matters advice service.

Volvo Constructions Equipment Haulers Ltd / Rokbak

Based in Motherwell with almost 400 employees, Volvo Construction Equipment Haulers Ltd (VCEH) is a global manufacturer of articulated and rigid dump trucks which are exported across the world. Previously owned by Terex Corporation, the company was acquired by Volvo Group in 2014 to grow its business in the mining sector. The site has gone from strength to strength since change of ownership with major investment in the factory and products, including the launch of Generation 10 articulated trucks in 2016 and the launch of the first Volvo-branded rigid trucks in 2018 and a recent rebrand of the articulated trucks from Terex Trucks to Rokbak in 2021, the first brand launched as part of the Volvo Group.

VCEH’s history can be traced to 1934 where it played a part in creating the first off-road truck. Since then, it has continued to be a pioneer in the industry. This particular site sees initial ideas hatched in the engineering and design department and transformed into off-road trucks that range in size from 30-95 tonne payloads. Trucks begin as sheet metal and are welded, fabricated, built and painted on site. The majority of research, product development and customer support is coordinated from Motherwell, allowing quick reaction to customer and market needs. In fact, there are few large-scale manufacturers like it remaining in Scotland.

Once the trucks leave the factory, they prove their mettle in some of the most extreme temperatures and gruelling conditions in mining, quarrying and construction sites globally.

Our focus, at UKSE, is on helping businesses in Lanarkshire and other steel areas across the UK, with investments, loans and premises. We’ve been doing that since 1975.

We’ve invested over £27m in Scottish businesses and these investments have helped 1,500 firms create over 17,500 jobs.
